When I heard that there was a cycle taking place from Mizen to Malin head in order to raise much needed funds for Cancer Research in St. James Hospital and Trinity College Dublin, I immediately had a desire to be a part of the challenge. To my surprise the fundraising part was easy. I believe that cancer is something that has been a part of everyone’s life to some level and for this reason, people were very generous to support the cause. The tough part for me then was to complete the cycle.
On September last, I met up with the first part of the team in Limerick before then venturing our way down to Mizen head. I had initially been apprehensive as to how I would get along with the cycle as I did not know anyone participating in the first day of the cycle. To my amazement, this did not present to be an issue. I was immediately greeted with friendly faces and warm smiles and before I knew it I was immersed into a big family of people who all shared the same passion and goals as I did.
The complete journey was to take place over seven days. Throughout this time friendships were made, stories were shared and jokes were told. The atmosphere amongst everyone was incredible and the team spirit helped to get everyone over the rough patches of the cycle. I was also amazed by the amount of support that we got from the public as we went through the towns and cities from cheering to hooting of horns and generous donations. The atmosphere created in each place was truly magical. I have to say that it was definitely the highlight of the year for me and I look forward to the challenge of 2013 with great excitement.
